God Bless all our troops

"What a great country we live in and our post is proud to stand tall" announces Hal Rathbun, Commander of the Fairfield Bay VFW.

"We worry when our troops leave for the war, but what a happy day when they return," adds Rathbun.

On a recent return CPL. Martin Matzer, USMC and CPL. Joseph Rosenblum, USMC paid us a visit to the VFW on Friday night. Larryoke brought the room to tears when he played "Proud to be an American," headed up by the Post Commander and our visitors. "We are proud of our armed forces," says Ted Wade Jr. Vice at the post. "That is why the post has been so busy with various activities latley. We have to support our troops and we want to be active in our community and country," he adds.

A Consumer Alert

Dan Feuer

Editor

It has been brought this papers attention that there are numerous scams throughout the country and they are hitting home here in the Bay. One that we had the unfortunate dealings with asked us to advertise their loan company and they followed all the necessary procedures in place for advertising with our paper. We ran the ad the first week and shortly after that we received a call from someone that had called this company. Well it turns out this company uses what’s called an advance fee program. They tell you that if you send them x amount of dollars to guarentee the loan you will recieve your money. They ask you to send it Western Union and by that time your money is lost. If you or you know of someone that has been effected by such a scam please contact the State Attorney Generals office for assistance. You more than likely will not receive your money back but you maybe able to shut these scam artists down. We of course have removed that particular ad after the first run and we are going to be more selctive in our process of screening any future potential lenders.

Another scam is hitting your mail boxes and it’s a lottery scam and they are basedout of the country. DO NOT respond to any such mailings. These mailings are telling you that you are a winner and that they will do a wire transfer to your bank. The forms that are attached require you give out your bank information and next of kin.

It seems that more and more people have nothing better to do than cheat hard working people out of their well earned money, for which there is no recovery and much heartache. We cannot emphasize the importance of using desrection in any situation regarding your personal finances. Always keep in mind the old saying, "if it sounds to good to be true, it usually is."

Arkansas Community of Excellence August meeting results

MARKETING:

Jim Summers reported that the Fairfield Bay ad in the magazine "Living in Arkansas" is incorrect. The publisher has accepted full responsibility for the error. They apparently took wording from an older ad and plans for adjusting the fee will be made.

The Arkansas Fall & Winter newspaper insert will be coming out September 12th . The circulation of the out of state is 2,393,000. The instate will be distributed sometime during the week of Sept. 12th with a circulation of 971,000. Fairfield Bay gets a listing in that insert for anyone interested to request a brochure of Fairfield Bay by giving you the website to request information.

The Greers Ferry Little Red River brochure is underway and Fairfield Bay is participating in that again. The Tour Guide is out and that is an important piece to be in as 750,000 copies of that are printed a year and when inquiries come in to the state and want information, that brochure goes out to them.

The next Marketing Meeting will start the planning for 2005.

The A&P is improving some over last year. It is still down due to the loss of the Conference Center. It is up 26% ($800) through the end of July over the same period last year.

A question came up in regard to the A&P tax as to whether private condominium owners that rent them out, realize that they must charge that tax. Property owners that rent out their property will need to be notified, explaining the tax and a form to use for such. An article in an upcoming Journal was suggested.

Dan Feuer, Fairfield Bay Newspaper editor, stated that the Journal is going out the early part of September and asked for the Chamber Director, Sue Kelly’s input and anyone else that would like to add something to the paper is needed by August 25th. The extra journals will be distributed in Little Rock in free stands in the River Market area. Dan was complimented by the ACE Chairman, Willena Herman, for printing the highlights of the meetings in the paper and maybe printing reports of the individual committee meetings also in the future.

HEALTH COMMITTEE:

Linda Duncan was not present. Bill Duncan reported that the hospital opening would be when everything is ready which should be the end of this month. There are some issues with the nursing home.

JOINT COMMITTEE ON DUAL GOVERNMENT:

Bill Duncan reported that the committee will be cut to two people from each governing agency and a member at large as the Club Board President nor Mayor can serve.

The paving is done and only one short stretch left on Woodlawn just south of Fern that did not get paved because they ran out of time and tonnage. If it starts breaking down, it will be repaved. The parking lot at the Racquet Club did get paved. West Cliff is paved and the stripers will be in to paint.

The company that is going to install the new miniature golf course met with the code enforcement officer to see what they needed and what is required to get that installation going.

At the end of the month a Christian motorcycle group will be holding a rally primarily in support of battered women. The city has rented them the entire park by the Marina at a discount.

The VanBuren County Sheriff’s office reported that if Fairfield Bay was ever in need of additional help for clean up, they would bring some of their prisoners over to help. That was done on the 5th of July and they did a great job of cleaning.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE:

Marge Wright reported that the big clean up is September 11th. We will be doing all the roads in and around Fairfield Bay on that morning. It is not only lake clean up but also the road clean up. An extra dumpster will be at Meade Park for the trash bags and all that do will be given a ticket to attend the picnic at Greers Ferry. A head count of those who helped is needed even if you don’t attend the picnic.

LIBRARY – HART CENTER:

Dick Kellenberg reported that the Community Club turned down a plea for financial aid so a professional librarian or a part time librarian could be hired. We have run out of sources to be able to hire someone. Charging $5 for library cards after book entries are computerized, was discussed.

The Hart Center signed a contract for propane for next year for 24,000 gallons at $1.04.

The timeshare attendance at the Fitness Center has been good this year. A membership drive will be coming up in a month or so.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

Sue Kelly reported the committee discussed a bond with the city for a 60-125 room hotel. They are looking at other options also.

Discussed the retirement center that Rev. Krause proposed, the mall was also discussed.

ECONOMICS:

Patti Manville reported that Hillcrest Grocery store would be opening soon.

You all may remember a few months ago when two blond Labs came into the shelter. They were a mess, poor things were covered with ticks. It took a lot of work to get them cleaned up, and were they happy to be rid of those buggers!! We called them Luci and Desi and they were really nice dogs and obviously belonged together. Peg and Gene put them on our internet and lo and behold a gentleman who was looking on the internet for a cat saw them. They were his dogs. Someone had evidently let one lose and of course her buddy was sure to follow. They had been gone from their home for over 2 months and come a long way to get to Fairfield Bay. Needless to say they are home now and that makes a happy ending!
Seems there is a never ending supply of kittens. Every time one is adopted another one arrives to take that space..Twenty seems to be a magic number right at the moment, and that's a lot of little guys. There is every color you could imagine and cute - guess I don't have to tell you. You already know that. There are 2 or 3 who will be good barn cats, friendly but aloof. The others are just plain lovers and entertainers. Some of the kittens have sponsors so if there is a chance you might like a kitten, now is the time. It's a deal you can't beat and kitty who will love you forever -- except when said cat is mad at you.
My daughter sent me an article a while back regarding the danger that raisins and grapes pose dogs. I thought , Oh for Pete's sake." , and filed it away. Well here I am with egg on my face. Since that first article I've seen two more on the same subject. Now, I have a dog who will eat anything and I know she has had some raisin bread. I say this because I eat raisin bread and if I eat it you can bet she gets her share. However: fore warned is fore armed and your pet may be one who would have a bad reaction. So, no more raisins or grapes..Be careful..
