AUTHORS TO
CONSIDER
PERHAPS NEW TO YOU
at the Fairfield Bay Library

DONNA LEON writes contemporary crime novels set in Venice. Her lead, Commissario Brunetti, is a most engaging cop.  These books ‘shimmer in the grace of their setting and are warmed by the charm of their characters’.  These mysteries introduce you to the Venice insiders know.  (international Bestselling Author). Mood/Tone  -  Warm and intelligent.
MARK MILLS writes rich and beautiful mysteries full of sense of place and time. His third novel is reviewed as “A lush, romantic thriller, skillfully crafted…..”  All three novels have historic settings written so well you can smell the air. (Inter-national Bestselling Author). Mood/Tone  -  Haunting and Suspenseful.
WAYNE CALDWELL, author of CATALOOCHEE, follows that successful debut novel with a new book set in the same Appalachian ground of Cataloochee, North Carolina.  “….sounds like truth and feels like memory” says one reviewer. …this story of love and loss transcends regional concerns to speak to all places and all people.” Mood/Tone –  Heart and Humor.
LOUISE PENNY takes us to Three Pines, a village south of Montreal for a series of Chief Inspector Gamache mystery novels. Gamache is a shrewd and kindly man surrounded by several fascinating characters that evolve with each new book.  Reminds me of Agatha Christie’s work…but better. (Bestselling NYT Author). Mood/Tone – Compelling and Heartfelt.
LISA LUTZ writes books that are outrageous and funny.  Four comic novels later she keeps her style casual, swift and hip.
Her style is fresh stories that work real issues through an offbeat premise. “Irreverent”  “…irresistible blend of suspense, irony, and wit”
(NYT Bestselling Author). Mood/Tone – Comic and Light.
STEVE BERRY keeps the action going with Cotton Malone, former Justice Dept. operative- now found in his Copenhagen bookshop.  International suspense full of historical information. Think James Rollins, Douglas Preston, Dan Brown… Book 9 is on its way (NYT Bestselling Author). Mood/Tone – Adventure and Suspense.

The Gates Rogers Foundation hosted an Appreciation night for volunteers who have helped present programs, work on trails, and preserve natural resources at South Fork Nature Center in Choctaw.
The Board honored volunteers with a catered dinner held at Gates Rogers Foundation headquarters in Clinton.
“This has been an important year,” said Martha Treece, GRF Vice President. “Volunteers have provided 1,161 hours of time, and we had many successes including the mile plus of trail being finished and new grants to build additional trails. The docent programs have become very structured with different guest experts like Larry Lohman from the Native Plant Society presenting good botanical information.”
Program Director Dr. Don Culwell, retired UCA professor, has scheduled many other interesting programs, using
local and out-of-town experts. “We are lucky to have a wealth of knowledgeable people in our community,” he said. “We have botanists, entomologists, biologists, rangers, herbalists, icythyologists, and more. Stay tuned for some interesting upcoming programs.”
The next scheduled program is a night hike, led by Kay and Bob Verboon, on Saturday, May 29.  Call Executive Director Carol Corning at 745-6444 to register for this program or to receive the monthly e-newsletter that announces all upcoming programs.

Still Waiting….
The diligent Hotel Team has settled on a recommendation for a contractor, but must wait on Board approval, to be considered at the May meeting. Two legs of Bob Berdine’s three-legged stool will then be completed, leaving only the financing leg still outstanding.  The Board has been active in soliciting financing, but we are not through, waiting on final decisions from the banking community.
We are waiting for the beginning of gas drilling in the Bay area, because SO many things are waiting on the potential revenues from that operation. Another Board committee, the Development Committee, has begun consideration of how to spend that revenue when it becomes available.
We are waiting on the installation of the new recently approved breakwater at the marina, a million dollar project necessary to protect our docks and the boats moored there. The sooner the better.
We are waiting for elections and results and beginning a new Board in July.
There’s an old saying, “All things cometh to those who wait”, modified by “As long as they worketh like heck while they waiteth.”  The Board, the Club management and all its employees are working hard to make FFB an enjoyable place to be, with short & long range planning. The Board invites our membership to wait with us, and to be involved in the process by volunteering while you wait.

Night Hike to be held at South Fork Nature Center on May 29

A free Memorial weekend night hike will be held on Saturday, May 29 from 7:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. at South Fork Nature Center, Choctaw.
Participants will meet just before sunset in front of the log cabin for campfire-roasted marshmallows, soft drinks, and a brief introduction to South Fork Nature Center and the Riddle Cabin.
Docents Kay and Bob Verboon will lead the group along a one-mile trail through the woods and along low bluffs of Greer’s Ferry Lake. Kay is a former park ranger at a Louisiana state prehistoric Indian site. Bob’s background includes science, agriculture, and taxidermy; he teaches in the Clinton School District.
Kay says, “You’ll meet your nocturnal neighbors, and use your senses of smell, hearing, and touch to get an understanding of how these animals see in the dark. Also, you’ll find out how you can see a spider but not see a spider.”
Participants should bring flashlights. If you have one with a red light, that is ideal to maintain better night vision; if you don’t, red cellophane will be provided for everyone to use. Wear good sturdy walking shoes; white ones are easier to see in the dark if you’re following someone. The trail is flat and relatively easy, but some hikers might like to bring walking sticks for added security.
To get to the Nature Center, take U.S. Highway 65 south of Clinton and turn East at Highway 330 in Choctaw. Drive about 3 ½ miles and turn left on Klondike Rd., just before the blue boat storage building. Drive north about 3 miles to the gate; it has an entrance and a large stone sign. Turn right through the gate and drive less than a mile to the cabin; follow the signs past the private homes.
Do something different this Memorial weekend. Find out what’s in the woods at night. To reserve a place on the night hike, call or leave a message with Carol Corning, Executive Director of the Gates Rogers Foundation, at 745-6444.

2010 Board Candidate Resumes

Bruce Forsland

I moved to Fairfield Bay in 2000 from Minnetonka, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. I lived in the Minneapolis area for all but 1 ½ years spent in New Jersey. The move to the Bay came while traveling all over the country as part of the Professional Bowlers Association Senior Tour.
I must say, it was an easy decision for we enjoy an experience here that I could not find anywhere else in the country.
I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota and served in the US Air Force reserve for six years. My work experience involves 20 years with Prudential Insurance, mostly in computer systems design and management, where I was involved in budgeting for multi-million dollar departments as well as staff selection and training. I took an eight year break from Prudential to become an owner-operator of retail liquor stores where I learned first-hand the joys of setting and meeting a budget as well as what’s involved in maintaining a commercial building.
An avocation I maintained for ten years was the building/owning of race cars, which provided me with a tremendous understanding of how important equipment maintenance is and how complex it can be. Together with my experience in maintaining my commercial building, I believe I have acquired knowledge that could be helpful to the Board.
As an avid golfer, I have been heavily involved in activities at Indian Hills Golf Course. I have been President of the Golf Association, and either chair of or involved in the Beautification Committee of the Golf Association for many of my years here.
The question you probably have is “why should I vote for this guy”. I think the Community Club Board would benefit from my logical approach to problems. I do not enter any evaluation with a mind set that has bias one way or the other, but make common sense decisions based on all the facts. Those who have heard my questions regarding the hotel know I am persistent in trying to obtain the information needed to make an informed decision. I am also dedicated to getting that information to the membership to help them make decisions. The current Board has done a lot of good work on the hotel, but they have been reluctant to release information until it is fairly well set. I think the membership needs to know more sooner, even if it comes with a caveat that the information is not final.
The status of the hotel is important to every member but this should not be the determining factor in your vote, rather you should vote for the person who can best represent your interests on the Board.
Francis Grillot
My name is Francis Grillot, and I am seeking a second term on the Fairfield Bay Community Club Board.
I want to continue the work started by the Development Committee, and to see some of the projects completed for the betterment of the community.   I would like your vote to be your representative on the Board of Directors of the Fairfield Bay Community Club for the next three years.
Since communication continues to be the key to keeping all property owners informed about what is happening in Fairfield Bay, I intend to continue my work toward seeing that it happens in a timely fashion.    I want to continue to be involved in those changes that increase the possibility of growth, progress and a brighter future for Fairfield Bay.  It is my promise that in making changes, timely communication will continue to be made to all Community Club members.
Following is my experience and background:
Community Club Board Experience
Elected to the Board in 2007
Served as Board Secretary since 2007
Appointed to IHCC remodeling committee in 2007
Served as Board liaison on IHCC Advisory Committee – 2007-09
Represented the Board on the Public Works Committee – 2008-10
Worked with the FFB Mayor to develop gates and warning signs at Westcliff Drive and Beaver Road – 2008-9
Appointed Chairman of the Development Committee established in 2009
Responsible for establishing a committee of local experienced Club members able to contribute to the development of FFB by making specific plans for utilizing the future revenue of a 1% gas royalty.
Current Local Involvement
Served on the Board of the Country Club Ridge Property Owners Townhouse Association since 2002 and have been President since 2003.
Served on the Board of the Cliffside II Timeshare Association 2003 – 2007.
Serving as Secretary and a member of the Board of the Rotary Club of FFB 2002-2007.
Associate member of the FFB VFW.
Personal
Born and raised on a farm five miles NW of Parsons, KS, and still own and operate the farm. Served 10 years in the United States Army Reserve: Honorably Discharged. Married in 1957, have four children, 15 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Seven grandchildren graduated from college, two grandchildren are still in college.
Am a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church and the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus, serving as Treasurer of the 3rd degree from 2001 to 2006 and Grand Knight in 2008 – 2010.
Education
Graduated from Kansas State University in 1958, with BS in Chemical Engineering.
Graduated from Wichita State University in 1965 with an MS in Business Administration majoring in Marketing.
Became a registered Professional Engineer in Kansas in 1968 and at one time was registered in 18 states and am still registered in Kansas and Arkansas.
I believe the experience I bring to the Board will allow me to serve you in a fair and unbiased manner to bring about improvement and growth to Fairfield Bay.
Roy Baker
The Community Board and Community Club management have laid a solid foundation for responsible growth. Future boards must see that financially sound plans are executed in support of this goal. The completion of the new hotel is a critical aspect of this plan.
My experience is uniquely suited to serve in this capacity. It includes: sales and marketing, leading the U.S. Department of Commerce for Iowa, running my own business and community governance.
My wife, Mary, and I moved to Fairfield Bay eight years ago. This community has been everything we hoped for in a retirement. It would be an honor to give back to the community that has given so much to us.
