Pastors Asked To Establish Prayer Rooms

A group of people have come together in Van Buren County with a united goal of working with local churches to establish prayer rooms open to the public. This united group of christians believes that the difficulties of our time often lead to families in distress and individuals feeling lost and hopeless. Facts are that some people in this county do go hungry, cannot pay all their bills , and are unable to provide for their children with the basic needs. Hardships are endured by many in this county and the future of higher fuel and food costs are expected to increase the number of people that experience distress. The group is contacting as many county pastors as possible with the idea of establishing prayer rooms at or near church locations. Interested pastors are asked to appoint a prayer minister or group ministry in each church so that pastors are not burdened by the day to day management of the rooms. Suggestions are offered to the Pastor and Prayer Minister (Ministries) to establish hours for the prayer room that are acceptable to their congregation and location to secure their premises when church personnel are not present and other ways to enhance and encourage individual participation in prayer activities. An additional suggestion is to provide a secure drop box for small contributions that can be placed in an envelope and marked for a particular charity. The group believes that giving is essential to receiving and that these donations would not only benefit the designated service agency but would primarily benefit the donor. The Prayer Minister could assist the pastor with the duties of the administration of the donations. The group of people coming together are Christians from several denominations with a purpose to reach out to all this county towards faith, hope and charity; to foster prayer rooms at or near churches throughout the county whenever possible; to provide through pastors a prayer ministry at each participating church; and to provide an opportunity to serve by prayer and giving. Prayer can have a powerful effect in so many ways. Prayer has a positive effect on those who pray as well as those prayed for. Our hearts may be touched in very surprising ways that lead us to specific ways in which we might help others. The group believes we need to renew our dedication to the rule “Love they neighbor as thy self.”To learn more about prayer rooms and this effort and to obtain more information, interested persons may call Marion Taylor at any time at 501-884-6463.

City Encourages Overnight Lodging Rentals

April 26, 2011 by

We need your help.  With the temporary delay of the hotel construction, the City of Fairfield Bay would like to encourage our property owners to consider offering nightly rentals of available lodging to accommodate visitors.  There are plenty of empty beds in Fairfield Bay; we just have to make them easily available to potential visitors.  All that is required by law is to:•Submit state taxes per forms easily obtained from the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration.•Submit city Advertising and Promotions taxes to Fairfield Bay.  Contact the city offices at 501-884-6500 and we will be happy to assist you in getting the correct forms.  You have four ways to obtain them:  1)  You can come by the office  2)  We will fax you the form  3)  We will mail you the form or 4)  You can make copies off of the city website.  We want to make this as easy as possible for you.   Note:  If you have been doing nightly rentals and not submitting the separate forms to the City of Fairfield Bay, you need to call and get the forms and make your back payments of this tax to catch up.  We will waive the penalties for the next 30 days if you have missed these payments. The Fairfield Bay Community Club wants to promote all available lodging on their website, and they will be happy to list yours.   You can help Fairfield Bay and earn some extra money by offering your lodging for overnight rentals.  We have already turned down two family reunions and a golf tournament this year and sent away a conference for next year due to lack of overnight lodging.  Please give this serious consideration.

Choose Mutual Funds Carefully to Help Diversify Portfolio

April 26, 2011 by

If you’re somewhat familiar with investing, you probably have heard that owning mutual funds is a good way to help diversify your portfolio. Is this true? And, if so, how should you go about selecting the right mutual funds? To begin with, let’s quickly review the importance of diversification. By owning a variety of investments— such as stocks, bonds and government securities — you can help reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. And while diversification by itself cannot guarantee profits nor protect against a loss, a diversified portfolio can help you reduce the impact of market downturns that may hit one asset class particularly hard. Because an individual mutual fund invests in many different securities, it automatically brings a certain degree of diversification to your portfolio. And yet, you can’t just purchase any combination of mutual funds and expect good results.  Consider this: There are more than 8,000 mutual funds in the financial marketplace, according to the Investment Company Institute, the trade group for the mutual fund industry. About 60 percent of these funds are stock funds, with the rest being “hybrid” or “balanced” funds (which invest in a mix of stocks and bonds), taxable bond funds, municipal bond funds, and money market funds. With such a large number of funds available, and with a finite amount of stocks, bonds and other securities in which these funds can invest, it’s easy to see that there is going to be considerable duplication among many of these mutual funds — and duplication is the opposite of diversification.  Consequently, when you invest in mutual funds, you can’t just adopt a philosophy that can be boiled down to “the more, the merrier.” Furthermore, it isn’t just a matter of one “large-cap growth” fund looking like another. You might find that the large-cap fund (a fund that invests in stocks of large companies) is also quite similar to a “technology” fund. So, what’s the solution to avoiding “overlapping” funds? There’s no magic formula — you have to do your homework. Before purchasing a new fund, look closely at its holdings, which will be posted on the fund’s prospectus. (Also, while you’re looking at the prospectus, make sure you understand the fund’s investment objective, risk, charges and expenses.)  Then compare these holdings to the ones listed on your existing mutual funds — if you see too many redundancies, you may want to take a pass on this particular fund. Ultimately, your first step in diversifying a mutual fund portfolio is to identify your individual risk tolerance and investment objectives. Are you a conservative, moderate or aggressive investor? Do you need growth, income or a combination of both?  Once you’ve answered these questions, you can then begin selecting the right mix of mutual funds to help you achieve your financial goals. Of course, with all the variables involved, both in your personal situation and in the funds themselves, you may want to enlist the help of a professional financial advisor — someone with the experience to help you choose those funds that are right for you. Many people have successfully incorporated mutual funds into their investment strategy — and with the proper effort and assistance, you can too.
Mutual funds are offered and sold by prospectus. You should consider the investment objective, risks, and charges and expenses carefully before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information. Your Edward Jones financial advisor can provide a prospectus, which should be read carefully before investing.
