Karen Ammerman has been a Chamber Volunteer for more than ten years and enjoys her work.
Sherry Guess Staff Writer. The Fairfield Bay Chamber of Commerce is a local organization that does a great deal of good for our community. The volunteers at the Chamber are, in general, the first public face our visitors and newcomers see when arriving in the area, either for vacation, just passing through or even considering which area they may like for a new home in North Central Arkansas. During tourist season the Chamber office is generally open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.. Volunteers sign up to greet visitors and answer questions or offer brochures about all the great sightseeing adventures that are in or very near to our town. Those who do volunteer do so with the understanding that they will work two 3 hour shifts during a month. During the shift, all that is required is your smile and welcoming attitude. You may have a few visitors stop by or answer a few phone calls during the 3 hours, As an added bonus, you will probably rub elbows with the FFB News team, the Mayor and his staff, and the FFB Community Club employees as we all share the same building, The Bay Center. If you are relatively new to Fairfield Bay and wish you could get to know a few more people, this is a great way to do so. Fairfield Bay has many volunteer organizations and each one is a vital part of what makes Fairfield Bay such a great place to visit or to live. If you’ve been toying with the idea of getting just a little bit more involved, the Chamber offers lots of benefits and is central to everything that goes on in The Bay. Contact the Chamber office by calling 884-3324 or just stop by and discuss it. There is a calendar so you can decide which open times work best for you. The calendar makes it easy for you to plan around your busy schedule, outside appointments or your own trips and vacations. Give it a try. You’ll meet some great people and be rewarded with new friendships and lots of fun meeting vacations who never fail to be in a good mood. It’s contagious!

Mason Mobbs… I graduated from South Side Bee Branch School, in 2008. I spent three years at UACCM in Morrilton. I am now finishing my first year at UCA in Conway. I am really enjoying the school. I have had more fun this semester at UCA then I have, thus far, in my four years at school. I got my Associates degree at Morrilton in architectural drafting and design. I am now getting my Bachelor’s degree in Digital Filmmaking, and am on the verge of majoring in interior design. It may seem like a lot, but I’m having a lot of fun. I’m majoring in three different fields that I really love, so that if one doesn’t work out I’ll have a degree on something else to fall back on. The scholarship money has gone to my books and my tuition. The Rotary Club has been one of the greatest blessings I’ve ever encountered. They helped me to go to college, and if it hadn’t been for them I don’t think I would be in college right now. I truly had my doubts. I had support, but not enough, and when the Rotary Club came to me in my senior year, and told me they were interested in making me a schoaship student, it was definitely a blessing, and I have them to thank for not only giving me this wonderful opportunity and experience, but also all of the other scholarship students they’ve helped as well. The Rotary Club has definitely made a difference in my life. Thank you

Lions Clubs around the world have many things in common but each Lions Club have their own unique personality and way of fulfilling the motto, “We Serve.” Here in Fairfield Bay there is a special room in our Lions Den called the Sunshine Room which was part of the original design of the building. This room holds a variety of medical equipment for short or long term loan as a community service for residents and visitors to Fairfield Bay and the surrounding area. Items available include ambulatory products such as tripod and regular canes, crutches, adjustable folding walkers (some with wheels some without), shower and bath benches and chairs, commode accessories, wheel chairs, chair lift and an over bed table. Arrangements for these items can be made by calling Mary Ann Bryan @ 884-4808, Jim & Phyllis Wilkins @ 884-3970 or any Lions Club member to see if needed items are available at that time. Once availability of needed equipment is determined arrangements can be made for pickup of the items at the Lions Den and may be returned by simply leaving them in the foyer. The Lions Club also gladly accepts donations of these types of equipment for sharing with others. We can not accept larger items such as hospital beds and mechanized scooters due to lack of proper storage for such items. If you would like information regarding becoming a Lions member please contact our membership chair, Mary Meadows 884-6388 or any Lions Club member. Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 10 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the regular meeting starting at 6 p.m. when our speaker will be Geary Leason speaking on Outreach in the Hills. BINGO is held each Monday evening with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the first game called at 7 p.m.

At our last meeting on March 22 the FFB Lions received an update on Boy Scout Troop 401 for which the FFB Lions are the charter organization. Pictured above (L – R) are advisory board members Lion Ron Milligan, and Lion John Edminston, with Senior Scout Ethan Goodnight and Scout Master and fellow Lion Craig Fisher. Scout Master Craig advised that Troop 401 is currently in its 23rd year here in Fairfield Bay and have provided scouting opportunities for some 130 plus boys during those years including the current 11 members. The boys learn Scout Law to include being Loyal, Reverent, Trustworthy, Helpful, Clean, Kind, Courteous, Obedient, Friendly, Cheerful, Brave & Thrifty and recite this during each meeting. Senior Scout Ethan, who is currently working to become an Eagle Scout, and the Scout Master Craig provided a slide show and information on their activities during the past year including being the honor guard during flag ceremonies at the Veterans Day Memorial in Clinton this past year and hosting approximately 170 district scouts for the 2011 Foothills Fall Camporee held right here in Fairfield Bay. Our Troop also attended the Spring Camporee in Heber Springs along with some 200 other district scouts. These events are designed both to have fun, such as playing Scout Shoes (horseshoes but using tennis shoes), wiffle ball in the woods, and to teach life skills and share companionship with fellow scouts around the closing campfire. The Fairfield Bay Lions look forward to continuing our support of both Boy Scout Troop 401 and Cub Scout Troop 401. BINGO is held each Monday night at the Lions Den on Dave Creek Parkway with doors opening at 6:30 pm and the first game at 7 p.m., During March two $500 jackpots were awarded along with regular game prizes. Please come and join us. Our next regular meeting will be Thursday, April 12 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting beginning at 6 p.m. with our guest speaker, IRV Administrator Donna Rock.

Fairfield Bay Questers Host Joint Meeting

L. to R. Gail Zanoff, Suzanne Runsick, Penny Cuttone, Jean Eaton, and Bill Tucker.
The Davis Special Chapter and Indian Rock Questers Chapters of Fairfield Bay joined by Questers representatives from Calico Bluff’s Chapter in Calico Rock met on March 15, 2012 for luncheon at Indian Hills Country Club. The Questers are an International Non-profit Organization with chapters throughout the United States and Canada dedicated to the study of antiques and the preservation of historic places and things. Joint meetings of the two local chapters are special occasions and honorees for this meeting were Arkansas State Questers President, Linda Hunter, and Arkansas State Past- President Pam McAllister of Hot Springs Village. In addition to our special guests, the Questers were especially fortunate to have a presentation on The History of Native Indian Flutes by Bill Tucker, Vice-Chancellor Emeritus of Dallas County Community College System in Dallas, Texas and brother of a Fairfield Bay Quester, Beth Tucker. Chancellor Tucker began playing the contemporary Native American flute in 1998. Since that time he has become an avid promoter of the flute through his workshops and seminars. He has also become a master designer and craftsman of flutes and other musical instruments. He brought a wide variety of his flutes to demonstrate their beautiful design and sounds. Using live and recorded music the audience was introduced to the origins, music and cultural heritage of this indigenous instrument. Bill explained that during the 1920’s and 30’s many aspects of the Native American culture were being lost, including the music of the flute. However, through the efforts of a few individuals the instrument has been reintroduced to its rightful place in Native American culture. Members of the audience were asked to sing along and we all joined in chanting the Zuni Sunrise Song to the haunting tones of Bill’s flute. Bill and President Hunter’s duet with flute and gourd shaker won a rousing round of applause from the audience. Four brave Questers volunteers were soon filling the room with lovely flute melodies as they quickly responded to Bill’s instructions. It was a very informative and entertaining afternoon. All of us went away with a deeper appreciation of this beautiful and versatile instrument. Following the program, Jean Eaton was presented with a flute and shaker gourd made by Chancellor Tucker expressly for the Log Cabin Museum. He decorated the instruments by burning replicas of the petro glyphs found in Indian Rock Cave on both the shaker and the flute. Several lucky Questers received door prizes of flutes, shakers, and an original painting by Bill Tucker. As a special thank you to our honored guests, Presidents Hunter and McAllister were each presented with an original oil painting by local artists, Melba King and Doris Sexson.
