Indian Rock Village’s June employee of the month is Jo Cornell. If you have been to any of our big events you have tasted Jo’s yummy creations. She is a valued member of our team and goes above and beyond to ensure the residents get a wonderful menu. It is common to walk into the kitchen and see her with 5 cookbooks at a time open on the counter. There are sticky notes on everyone that she has tried. Thank you, Jo for everything you do!

Stas’ Ziolkowski, Story Fest founder.
The National Storytelling Network (NSN www.storynet.org) recently announced that Stas’ Ziolkowski of Fairfield Bay is the recipient of the Oracle Award for Service and Leadership in the South Central Region. This award is presented to individuals or organizations that have made a significant contribution to their local or regional storytelling community and/or have used storytelling to make a significant contribution to the larger community in which they live. Stas’ founded and directed the first Fairfield Bay Storyfest in 2010, drawing visitors to the area and providing national storytellers to local schools at no cost. When the budget was cut, Stas’ wrote hundreds of letters and produced two plays to raise funds, ensuring 2011 Storyfest could continue. Additionally, Stas’ has performed more than a dozen benefit shows for the Fairfield Bay Library (because it doesn’t receive any government funds and has to be self-supporting), initiated a storytelling class, involved the class and community in Kevin Cordi’s Story Box project, and instituted a weekly story night as an ongoing recreation/vacation offering. Stas’ performs solely to spread the love of storytelling and never asks to be compensated for his work.Stas’ Ziolkowski will receive his award at the National Storytelling Awards Ceremony on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Casa Rio in San Antonio, Texas. Ozark Health has just completed its annual MASH program. MASH is intended to introduce local high school students to different careers in the medical field. All participants received certification in CPR and First Aid. Following a day-long safety and privacy orientation, the students each were given their own stethoscope and the opportunity to shadow employees in the Operating Room, Emergency Department, Rehabilitation Services Department, and Medical-Surgical Unit, as well as the Radiology, Respiratory, Laboratory, and Outpatient Departments. An extended tour was provided of the Nursing Center, the Air-Evac helicopter and the Southern Paramedic Service ambulance. Dr. Steve Schoettle directed the group in learning to suture, and Dr. Keith Coward tutored the students as they each dissected a heart. An oral health demonstration was given by Dr. Kyle Hensley, including skull anatomy. Dr. Jose Abiseid introduced them to proper bone casting, and each student was allowed to apply and remove an arm cast.Students were introduced to burn care and accident prevention by representatives of the Children’s Hospital Burn Center and the Arkansas Region Organ Retrieval Agency (ARORA). Valuable education in personal health and safety was provided by the Van Buren County Health Department. Jayne Evans, RN, spoke to the group about careers in Hospice, Home Health, Mental Health and Chemical Addiction. Career information was also provided by a UAMS career guide. We would like to especially recognize Van Buren County Farm Bureau Insurance who significantly funded the MASH program, and Cindy Wilson, chairperson of their Women’s Committee, who organized monitors from among their group to assist in supervising the students, and graciously attended the MASH graduation ceremony. Others we would like to thank are the Ozark Health Foundation, the Clinton Meat Processing Company, and the Arkansas Department of Health Oral Health Division serving with other members of the Medical MENTOR Partnership. Student participants were Kiowa Berry, Shayla Gray, Mariah Henson, Lizbeth Hernandez, Garrett Robins, Brittany-June Scott, Paxton Scott, Abby Stevens, and Nicole Stewart. Ozark Health would like to commend these students for their maturity and dedication to their future
