I hope everyone had a chance to read last weeks article that covered the new and improved Indian Hills website. I encourage everyone to visit the new website at www.indianhills.cc and see all updates and new information about the Club. This week I will discuss the importance of having an established USGA Handicap.
The USGA Handicapping System was developed to “make the game more enjoyable by enabling players of different abilities to compete on an equitable basis.” There are many players at Indian Hills who already have established handicaps but also many who do not. I want to encourage all players to establish a handicap for many reasons but most importantly for member tournaments. I have heard numerous times “that team is stacked” or “that team is unfair.” The only solution is for member events to be handicapped which would require players participating in designated events to have an established USGA Handicap. In order to achieve this, it will be a group effort. I am currently working with the ASGA to ensure our golf course is rated from all four sets of tees. Once completed, members can post scores playing from any set of tees and establish a handicap to level out the playing field in member events.
If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns you can always stop by or call the golf shop at (501) 884-6018. Also, check out www.usga.org under USGA Handicapping for more information. Next week I discuss the 2011 Tournament Schedule. Have a great week!

Everyone is invited to play in the 28th Annual Fairfield Bay Shrine Club Golf-A-Rama, Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Indian Hills Golf Course.
The entire net proceeds from these events goes directly to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children and the Transportation Fund, where they can receive orthopedic and burn treatments free of cost to their families. The funds raised as a result of this tournament have helped many children, whom would otherwise not have received badly needed treatment. Your help, by participating, is much appreciated by the Shriner’s and the children who are being treated at the hospital.
On Friday, September 10 beginning at 5 p.m. a no-host cash bar and cocktail party with complimentary hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be available in the Fairfield Room at Indian Hills Country Club. Registration will be in the lobby of the Country Club during the reception. Golfers not registering there can register on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at the Golf Pavilion.
On Saturday, September 11 golf will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and feature some special events. The special events covered by the $60 entry fee includes the first Hole-In-One contest at designated holes, featuring a new Chevy Silverado 4×4 Pickup, with many other quality prizes such as trips and merchandise.
This tournament has been a sellout for a number of years so early registration is strongly suggested to avoid disappointment. For more information please contact Charles Duran at 501-884-6112. There are no refunds after September 7, 2010.

I hope everyone enjoyed last week’s article that covered the changes that have taken place to ensure Indian Hills conforms to the Rules of Golf. This week I will talk about the new and improved Indian Hills website.
Before I started at the Club, I noticed the website needed to be updated. With the help of Cotton Rohrscheib and his expertise on website design we recently launched the new and improved Indian Hills Country Club website. If you have not already seen the website please go to www.indianhills.cc and check out everything it has to offer. You will find up-to-date information about the Club, a calendar with upcoming events, tournament results, the ability to download the dining menus, links to our Facebook and Twitter pages, the current weather in Fairfield Bay, and much more! Also, coming soon, members and guests will have the ability to make tee time reservations online directly from the website!
The new website allows us to market the Club globally to anyone interested in visiting Fairfield Bay. I encourage all members and guests to use the website to your advantage and keep up with the latest news from Indian Hills!
Next week’s topic will cover USGA handicaps and the many reasons why they are important. If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns you can always stop by or call the golf shop at (501) 884-6018. Have a great week!

PGA Head Golf Professional
Once again I hope everyone had the chance to read last weeks article covering the new daily hole location sheet. This weeks article will cover the adjustments taking place to ensure Indian Hills conforms with the Rules of Golf.
Golf is a game and all games have a set of rules that players must obey. As a PGA Professional, it is my responsibility to support and uphold the rules of the game. We have taken many necessary steps at Indian Hills to make sure the golf course and the local rules conform to the USGA Rules of Golf and will continue to make changes as needed.
I first addressed the Local Rules that were composed in March 2008 because there was more than one Local Rule that did not conform. The Local Rules proposal I created and submitted to the Indian Hills Golf Association was approved and became effective in June, 2010. The most notable change is not allowing players at Indian Hills to move the ball one club-length, no closer to the hole, on every shot. The Rules of Golf state “the ball must be played as it lies.” Along with addressing the Local Rules I looked at the markings on the golf course and found there to be little or no markings on many holes. I recently completed marking all parts of the golf course with stakes as needed which took over five weeks to finish. The stakes are positioned so all can be seen from one to another to determine the margin of the hazard or out-of-bounds when the line is not painted. The stakes are also positioned to completely define the hazard or out-of-bounds which is why it is necessary to have them between a few holes.
There is one more change that will take place so Indian Hills will conform to the USGA Rules of Golf. David Delk and his staff will be building three new tee boxes. One is already in the works on number seven for the gold tees which I’m sure many of you have seen. The new tee will make the course a par 70 from the gold tees and allow all players in tournaments to play the hole as a par five. The two other new tee boxes will be on seven and seventeen for the red tees. The new red tee on seven will be located on the greenside of the pond and will be tucked back and left of the pond creating a straight away par four approximately 220 – 230 yards in length for the red tees. The new tee on number 17 will be located just to the left of the cart path as you cross the creek and head up towards the green making the hole 85 – 95 yards for the red tees. The new red tees will eliminate the forced carry over the water and get rid of the illegal drop areas located on the far side of the water hazards.
Next week I will discuss the new Indian Hills Country Club’s website that has many new features and up-to-date information for members and guests to check out. If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns you can always stop by or call the golf shop at (501) 884-6018. Have a great week!

I hope everyone had the chance to read last weeks article covering men’s and ladies day. This week I will discuss the new daily hole locations at the Club and how they benefit the golfer and the maintenance crew.
Playing Indian Hills for the first time was a great challenge for many reasons but most notably because there are many holes where you cannot see the entire surface of the green. The daily hole locations prior to my arrival where front (red), middle (white), and back (yellow). The greens at Indian Hills are small and very challenging so I decided it would be beneficial for all players to have a better idea of where the hole is located on a daily basis.
Now the greens are marked into four quadrants to help all players know where the hole is located in relation to the green. Many of the greens at Indian Hills do not have a defined front, middle, and back which is why I decided to move forward with the new system. The best example is number 16; the entire surface cannot be seen from the fairway and the green does not have a front, middle, and back location. With the new system, players can visualize the green in relation to the pin which is very beneficial when playing the difficult 16th hole.
The maintenance crew has also benefited from the new system. When changing the hole locations on a daily basis, the staff does not have to carry multiple flags designating front, middle, or back and having four different locations helps with the traffic patterns and the wear and tear on and leading up to each green.
Next week I will discuss the changes that have taken place to ensure Indian Hills conforms with the USGA Rules of Golf. If you have any further questions, comments, or concerns you can always stop by or call the golf shop at (501) 884-6018. Have a great week!
