“The Aging Golfer”
By Reed McBride
Hi everyone. It is Reed from the Golf Shop. I have heard some talk around the shop about the effects of aging and what it does to your golf game. Here is a little bit of information just for you. Hope you find this helpful. We are all getting older. This is a fact of life and we just have to accept it. Each year we lose muscle mass, flexibility and some of us gain weight. All of this affects our swing, stamina, ability to rotate and turn. The loss of power is a common result and that means less distance with the golf ball. What would you say if I offered you a simple solution to this problem? Keep reading. A simple daily routine focusing on flexibility and strength training can make a big difference. If we spend 15 to 20 minutes each day concentrating on building and stretching our muscles we will be able to regain strength, stamina, flexibility and distance! Ask your doctor, nutritionist or do a search online for strength and flexibility training. We have a fitness training ball in the Golf Shop that illustrates great exercises for you to accomplish strength training and flexibility. Just don’t overdue it. Make it a 15 minute part of your daily routine and enjoy the results. Happy golfing!

Pickleball Is Fun And Challenging
We had a great turn out for the introduction to pickleball Monday night in Fairfield Bay! We started the evening with over 25 residents learning about the rules of the game, followed by a number of participants taking their first try at the sport on the courts at the tennis center. Pickleball is a sport you can pick up quickly, but it does take a little practice and adjustment to get used to the game of paddles and wiffle balls that bounce nothing like a tennis ball. After about 45 minutes of practice, we had two courts playing out points and having a wonderful time! We have made plans to keep people playing and practicing on a weekly basis, and we also have a designated time each week for anyone who would like to give pickleball a try for the first time. We will hold open play every Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Just show up, and we will offer a rotating format so everyone gets a chance to play and socialize. If there is a handful of people who would like to use this time to practice, we will designate one court for practice led by Recreation Director, Sheryl Paxton or Tennis Professional, John Paxton. If you would like an introduction to the sport before you head out with the group, we will be offering an “introduction to pickleball” class every Monday at 1 p.m. Additionally, if you have a group that would like to just come out to play, you may reserve the pickleball equipment for your use by calling the Recreation Office at 501-884-6008. Our goal is to turn our casual play dates into consistent play times, eventually create a league, and hold social event tournaments for our local players a couple times a year. Don’t miss out on the fun! See you on the courts Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:30!

On Tuesday, September 27 the Shirley Girl’s Golf Team completed their season by winning the school’s 3rd State Championship since 2003. This was the 3rd State Title for Coach Rick Ward and the Lady Blue Devils, winning in 2003, 2007, and now in 2011. The lady blue devils were led by sophomore Kylie Phillips who shot a personal best on 18 holes of 94 including 2 over par for her last 9 holes, almost making a hole in 1 on her last tee shot of the day. Junior Cassina Otto played the most consistent of the girls finishing with a round of 96, senior Simone Scheele started out strong and really held on at the end for a round of 99 and freshman Nikki Owen, playing in her first state tournament ,had her first birdie in tournament play to shoot a round of 112. The teams best 3 scores totaled 289 for a 1 stroke victory over favorite Calico Rock. Phillips, Otto, and Scheele earned all-state honors for finishing in the top 10. The tournament came down to Calico Rock’s last girl, who was one of the last girls to turn in a score, she had to shoot a 96 to tie, but when she posted a 97, the title went to Shirley ending their season with the ultimate goal- STATE CHAMPIONS!!!
