During the recent meeting of the Fairfield Bay community Club Board of Directors on Tuesday, January 26, 2010, Francis Grillot, board secretary, brought up the question of how to dispose of expired prescription and over the counter medications. Board member, Carol Anderson, said that she would undertake the project and has made arrangements with Ozark Health Medical Center to dispose of the biohazard waste collected from residents of Fairfield Bay.
The collection station has been established at the DPS (Department of Public Safety) for individuals to bring in and drop off unused and/ or expired medications as well as needles, syringes, lancets etc.
This is a free disposal service, which will help keep expired or unused medications out of our drinking water, and syringes, needles and other hazardous items out of the garbage bags.
What is medical waste? The Medical Waste Management Act defines “medical waste” as “biohazardous or sharps waste and waste which is generated or produced as a result of the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings/animals, research pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings/animals, production/testing of biologicals or the accumulation of properly contained home generated sharps waste”.
For additional information regarding medical or biohazardous waste, you can contact EH&S at 949-824-4170 or 949-824-9888.
PLEASE DO NOT DISPOSE OF YOUR UNUSED MEDICATIONS OR SHARPS DOWN YOUR SINK OR STOOL.
