Newly elected Queen for the March Ball is Marie Neic. The monthly business meeting of Zeta Sigma was held January 12 at the lovely home of Linda Reynolds with refreshments provided by Frieda McClellan. Sandra Olson led the meeting during which the group unanimously elected Marie Niec as Zeta Sigma’s Queen for the March Ball. Tauna McBee introduced the program speaker, Cathy Dugger. Cathy Dugger’s topic of CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, was most educational. For the past thirty years, she has taken CPR classes and certification and each time to address a specific need. In the 90s living on a farm, before cell phones were so dominant, she knew it was imperative to be prepared as a First Responder for her family and farm workers. When she and her husband, Jim, moved to Fairfield Bay in 2007, she joined the EMS squad as a second medical and was recertified again in CPR. In 2009, she received EMT certification which included CPR again. Before our program, she attended another CPR course for re-certification. Cathy Dugger remarked that each time she has taken a CPR class, there have always been some changes to technique, procedure and timing. The most recent procedure for non-medical personnel, i.e. general public, is compressions only for the adult sudden cardiac arrest victim. Formerly, rescue breaths were part of the procedure, and now they are not. She emphasized that everyone should and can learn CPR. It is a known fact that 80% of cardiac arrests occur in the home. Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when electrical impulses in the heart become rapid or chaotic which causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle is blocked. A heart attack may cause cardiac arrest. Cathy Dugger is hopeful that the Education Center will offer First Aid and CPR classes and encourages everyone to attend. Steps for CPR by non-medical personnel: 1. As soon as you see a person go down, grasp should and ask if victim is ok. Look and listen for breathing. 2. Call 911 and make sure entrance is open. 3. Place person on hard surface such as the floor and check for pulse quickly. 4. Begin compressions: 100 compressions per minute until medical personnel arrive.
